Sustainable nature of scientific conferences – the key role of transport
Abstract
Participation in scientific conferences is one of the natural aspects of academic life. It allows researchers to present their findings, learn about ongoing projects, and enjoy the opportunity for business travel to attractive destinations. However, conference tourism, like other forms of human activity, impacts the natural environment and contributes to an increasing carbon footprint. These issues are gradually becoming a part of scientific discussions. In this paper, we highlight that transport plays a crucial role in the environmental impact of conferences. Other factors, such as catering, conference materials, local excursions, and music
events, also contribute significantly. These elements influence not only the perception and memorability of the conference but also its overall carbon footprint. Discussions about participation in scientific conferences often reveal a mix of hedonism and hypocrisy. Nevertheless, these should be accompanied by thoughtful
reflection, which this paper aims to provoke.
