ALLEA – European platform for cooperation among academies of sciences

Abstract

ALLEA is founded in 1994. According to its latest strategy for 2025–2030, ALLEA’s main objectives are: promoting autonomy, integrity and trust in science; improving conditions for research; providing independent science advice; and engaging with member academies, partners and the public. The ongoing full-scale
aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, China's increased activity in the field of research, and the actions of the current US administration affecting funding domestic research programmes are examples of pressing issues the international scientific community needs to handle. ALLEA as an organisation is
constantly present in the European dialogue on science issues, e.g. by either regularly issued statements, such as the ALLEA Statement on ‘Threats to Academic Freedom and International Research Collaboration in the United States’ published in February 2025, or publications such as ‘The European Code of Conduct
for Research Integrity’ published in 2023. As ALLEA brings together 60 academies of science and humanities from 40 Council of Europe countries, it has a strong position in the scientific community. Moreover, as an internationally recognisable organisation, it actively cooperates with EU structures, e.g. European
Commission and the European Parliament, other academic networks (e.g. EASAC, FEAM, Academia Europea) and government institutions.
